Your Sins, Paid in Full

John 19:30

Sadly, many people go through their whole lives wondering if they have done enough to earn their way into heaven. They agonize over this because maybe they have been taught a false doctrine of work righteousness. Maybe they’ve never been religious at all throughout their lives and they just figured if they were a good enough person, they would earn their way into heaven. Maybe sometimes you have had thoughts like this yourself. Have I been a good enough Christian to cover up all of my sins? Unfortunately, we tend to do more sinning than we do good things. And even the good things we do are not all that great. God tells us in the book of Isaiah that our righteous acts, all of our righteous acts, are like filthy rags. Brothers and sisters, know that Jesus died for every sin that was ever committed or will be committed. But more personally for yourselves, know that Jesus has died for every one of your sins, ones that you have committed and ones that you will commit in the future. The full payment for sin was made when Jesus died on the cross on Good Friday. It is finished is what Jesus said. He didn’t say he paid for part of our sins and it was up to us to finish the job. He didn’t say that he paid for the sins of some people and left other people’s sins unattended to. Had he said those things, we would be right to wonder, has our salvation truly been earned? And you would feel fear and despair over that feeling. But trust and know, brothers and sisters, that sin, death, and hell no longer have any power over us. The full payment for sin was made. Brothers and sisters, it is finished. Amen.
