Would you call this beautiful?

John 10:11

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

What would you consider “beautiful?” Maybe a painting, your family, or nature? But what about a shepherd? Do you think shepherds are beautiful? I think most people would say, “No.”

And do you know what else isn’t beautiful? It’s us. We are spiritually ugly because we are by nature sinful and God’s enemies. As a result, we deserve to be ripped apart by wolves.

But instead, Jesus who is called our “Shepherd” is the one who was “ripped apart” on the cross. He died for us, his sheep. He died to pay for our sins. This is why Jesus is called the “good” Shepherd. (It could even be translated, “beautiful Shepherd.”) He is beautiful because he voluntarily laid down his life for us ugly sheep. And because he did so, we too will be raised to life and enjoy “the house of the Lord forever” as Psalm 23 says.

And that’s beautiful!

Thankful to have a beautiful Shepherd, just like you,

Vicar
