Who’s serving whom?

Luke 22:27

“For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.”

The answer to Jesus’ question is obvious: the one who’s being served (i.e. the one who is at the table) is greater than the person who’s serving.

And then comes the bombshell: “But I am among you as one who serves.” This is the all-powerful Son of God! Just a few months before he’d been transfigured, revealing his glory to at least some extent! This is the one who walked on water, who changed water into wine, who told the foaming waters of the Sea of Galilee to be still. And he’s doing what? He’s serving!

As we walk through Lent, we see Jesus’ serving love oh-so-clearly. He was willing to serve you to the greatest extent in being willing to lay down his life to win salvation for you. Wow. What grace! May his gracious, serving love fill you and me with humble confidence and joy.

Thankful for God’s serving love, just like you,
