Luke 9:51

“As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.”

“Jesus’ face was set toward Jerusalem,” as the original Greek says, in other words, he was determined to reach Jerusalem. He had a strict schedule to follow, and he was right on time.

Jesus was fulfilling his Father’s will of saving humanity, and nothing was going to stop him. He had entered Jerusalem because it was the city of destiny, the place where he would die on the cross, rise from the dead, and “be taken up to heaven.” Jesus knew that the cross would be unpleasant, where he would face the Father’s wrath over every sin, but Jesus did not waver. Jesus is always committed to us, to doing what is best for us.

Even now, as our ascended Lord, he rules all things for the benefit of us, his flock. But our lives do not always show gratitude for God’s commitment to us. We procrastinate; we make excuses for not following God wholeheartedly.

May God have mercy on us sinners. May Jesus’ commitment to us motivate us to commit to him more fully, not to earn his favor, but to show thanks and bring others to the knowledge of the truth.

Thankful for Jesus’ determination, just like you,

Vicar Phil
