What is there to find joy in?

Psalm 1:1+2

1Blessed is the one

who does not walk in step with the wicked

or stand in the way that sinners take

or sit in the company of mockers,

2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,

and who meditates on his law day and night.

Why does a Christian “delight” in the Word of God? Well, it tells us about the Way of salvation, the Way of life. It tells us that our sins have been forgiven through the life and death of Jesus Christ; and that because of him, God calls us his children. This is what motivates us to stay connected to His Word and be watered by it so that we can grow into a strong and vibrant tree, as the rest of Psalm 1 describes.

The writer of Psalm 1 delighted in the Word of God, though at the time of writing, they did not have the full Bible like you and me. They would’ve had the first five books of Moses (Torah), Joshua, and maybe Judges and Ruth, but no more. They would not have had any of the books of the prophets that made the promises and prophecies of the Savior clearer. And still, the writer delighted in the Word of God! We have even more to delight in than this Psalmist, for we have the full and complete revelation that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah, and we have life in his name!
