What a Night: A Night of Service

John 13:2-5

Foot washing was the job kept for the most menial of servants. Why so? Well, because people’s feet those days could get pretty nasty. They walked around on roads that were generally dirt or maybe cobblestone. And of course, animals use those roads too. And animals have this way of leaving things behind. And so by the end of the day, your feet could be just downright nasty. And so it was the job of the lowliest servant. If a family had servants, it was the job of the lowliest servant to wash the feet. It’s Passover mealtime. Jesus and his disciples are gathered. There is no servant available. Who is there? The ruler of the universe. The one who has been given all power by the father who knew he had come from God and was returning to God. The all powerful ruler of all things is there. And so what is the all powerful ruler of all things do? He gets down on his knees. And begins washing his disciples feet. Oh my. What an amazing savior you have. Who is willing to serve in whatever way is needed. Even if that means serving as the lowliest of servants. Oh, what a night. When God. Serves so humbly. Amen.
