We Sing About Our God!
1 Timothy 2:1-5
Luther talked about how as he was growing up and he reached early adulthood even, he hated God. Why? Luther had been taught that it was up to him, up to Luther and up to people, to earn God’s favor by being good. In fact, you had to be so good that you measured up to God’s standard. You had to be perfect. And Luther rightly said, “There’s no one who can do that.” And so he looked at God as being this angry ogre who was demanding from him something that no one could do. And then God opened his eyes to the truth that the just will live by faith. It doesn’t say the just will live by works. It says the just will live by faith. And all of a sudden, Luther began to realize the truth about God, that God wasn’t an angry ogre up there demanding from us, but rather God was a loving Father who loved to give to us. Think about it. The Father loved you and me enough that he was willing to send his own Son to this earth to live, die, and rise. The Son loved you so much that he was willing to go to the cross and lay down his life to win salvation for a sinner like you, a sinner like me. The Holy Spirit loved you enough that he was willing to reach out to you personally, was willing to work faith in your heart, was willing to baptize you into God’s name, was willing to feed you with the Word and feed you with the supper. Your God is love and everything he does, he does to save. Who is God and what is he like? He is a God who loves you dearly, who does everything possible to save you. And my brothers and sisters, I think that’s worth singing about. Amen? – Amen.
