We need light!

John 8:12

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”

I have to admit, I find this time of the year to be hard, because it gets dark so early! I get up and it’s dark; by the time I drive home, it’s dark. I find it to be depressing. You too? Some people even suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) because of the darkness. How do people in places like Alaska deal with the darkness? I don’t know.

If physical darkness can impact us so significantly, how much more does “spiritual darkness” impact us? Sin brings spiritual darkness. When I’m selfish, angry, bitter, when I fail to fear, love and trust in God above all things, when I fail to love my neighbor as myself, I’m plunging myself into darkness.

How good to hear Jesus say, “I am the light of the world.” Jesus drives out spiritual darkness, by shining his love upon us, by showering us with forgiveness, by promising his ongoing presence with us.

How good to live in the light!

Thankful for Jesus’ “light,” just like you,

pastor
