Jesus, The Fulfillment of Scripture

John 19:28

It seems almost too trivial to even report, doesn’t it? A guy who’s being crucified, who’s been up on the cross for close to six hours, he’s thirsty, no kidding. Why does God even report it? We get a hint from what comes right before it’s spoken in the Gospel of John, almost like an aside, where it says Jesus knowing everything was complete and so that the Scriptures would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” The Psalms had made it clear that the Savior was going to be thirsty. How do we know that he was thirsty? He told you. But why? He told you for a very simple reason. He wants you and me to know without any doubt, to know fully and completely that every T of your salvation has been crossed, every I of your salvation has been dotted. Not one single detail of what was necessary for you to be saved, not one single detail that God had prophesied has failed to come true. A trivial word? Oh no, not at all. As with every one of the words, it’s full of grace and love for you and for me because it says to us that our salvation is complete. Amen.
