Jesus, Have Compassion on Me

John 19:26-27

By this time, Jesus was definitely experiencing agonizing pain. The Romans had perfected, if you will, the art of crucifixion. They wanted the person who was being crucified to experience the most pain possible for as long of a period of time as possible. Now, we too experience pain in our lives, but none of us have ever experienced the pain that comes from being crucified. But when we feel our pain, when we feel pain, it dominates our thoughts. It maybe even dictates how we treat other people. We don’t think about other people. We don’t consider their needs. Jesus, on the other hand, was still thinking about others. He was there on the cross. And as he looked down and looked at his mother, he wasn’t thinking about how he was falsely accused or falsely sentenced. He wasn’t thinking about the pain that he was enduring at that time. Instead, when he looked down and saw his mother, he was thinking about her, her future, her safety, and her well-being. His heart went out to her. Now, think about how Jesus treats us, going back to the pain that we feel emotionally or physically in our lives. And we too can know that Jesus cares for us and has compassion on us. Never doubt that Jesus loves you because he gave himself up for you. He has had compassion on you all the days of your life, and he will continue to have compassion on you into eternity. Amen.
