Goin’ Fishin’
Matthew 4:19
“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”
When Jesus told Peter that he would now fish for people, do you think Peter was thinking “Why me?” He wasn’t a trained speaker or a scholar. He was simply a blue-collar laborer. Couldn’t Jesus pick someone more qualified? Well, as it turns out, this task of fishing for people isn’t just for Jesus’ early disciples, but it’s for you and me too. Jesus is calling us right now to go and catch people for his heavenly kingdom. So maybe now you’re wondering “Really? Why me? I don’t even know the Bible that well.”
But here’s the thing, Jesus doesn’t call the qualified, he qualifies those he calls. Right before Jesus gave his task to Peter, Jesus granted a miraculous catch of fish. Jesus was teaching him and us that he is all-powerful, we don’t need to be afraid, he is with us! The way that we catch people is by drawing them in with our love and good works with no strings attached, and when they’re hooked, we tell them about the hope we have in Jesus, our Savior from sin who caught us and cherishes us, his ultimate trophy! Let’s go fishin’ my friends!
