God died… and yet…

Devotion for Holy Friday

Matthew 27:50-52

And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life.

“Good Friday.” On this day we – rightly – focus our attention on the reality of Jesus’ death.

But it’s valuable to be reminded what Jesus’ death means. Jesus’ death means life! And God gives us a little glimpse of it by this mini-resurrection. It was as if God couldn’t wait for the world to see that Jesus’ death meant life, so he raised this small group of people from the dead!

And someday, because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, you will be raised from the dead, too!

It’s no wonder we call this Friday “Good.”

Thankful for “Good” Friday, just like you,
