Death isn’t what it seems!

Revelation 20:6

Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.”

When believers die in Jesus, their death is described as “sleep.” When we sleep, the implication is that we will wake up again. Death for the believer in Jesus is but the temporary separation of body and soul. But body and soul will be reunited, and we will “wake up;” we will resurrect from the “sleep.” This “sleep” and this “waking up” are also known as the second death and the second resurrection, respectively. And this second death has no power over us, because we, along with every believer in Jesus, have already taken part in the first resurrection.

The first resurrection is when we come to faith in Christ. Before that, we are spiritually dead in sin and transgression: the first death. But the Lord by his grace, woke us up with the powerful gospel message of Christ crucified. Therefore, we are blessed and holy. We are no longer afraid of death because we know that its effects are only temporary. Because Jesus rose on Easter Sunday, we too, will rise on the last day!
