Contrast: glory vs. gory

1 Peter 1:18-19

“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.”

We’ve entered Lent. For hundreds and hundreds of years, the New Testament church has set aside this time to particularly focus on Jesus’ suffering and death. Why so? Why would the church find this to be so important?

It’s because of the stupendous truth involved, that God was willing to redeem us, to buy us back from an eternity in hell. And what was the price? It was nothing so “worthless” as silver or gold. Rather, we were bought back by the precious blood of Christ. Wow!

Think about that truth for just a moment. GOD was willing to buy you back … by shedding His own blood! How much is the blood of God worth?! Why, it’s worth more than any amount of silver or gold!

And God was willing to pay that cost to buy you, to win forgiveness for you, to open up heaven for you. That’s amazing!

No wonder the church has found it wise to set aside time to focus on these things. May Jesus bless our Lenten journey.

Bought with Jesus’ blood, just like you,
