Be still!?

Hebrews 13:2

“Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.”

Abraham and Sarah actually got to do this! They had angels visit them – as well as God himself! – though at the beginning of the visit, Abraham and Sarah likely thought they were simply offering a meal to “normal travelers.”

In what ways can we practice hospitality now? We can be kind, compassionate, and friendly to people whom we cross paths with during our day-to-day lives. We can look for opportunities to give aid to people who need it. We can make it a point to try to talk to our neighbors. We can try to meet the new person at church or school or at work. Maybe we can even invite people to our homes!

While it might be neat to entertain an angel, it would be even better to entertain a fellow sinner who needed to meet Jesus, their Savior, for that hospitality could have eternal value. Look for opportunities to practice hospitality! After all, that gives us the chance to mirror God’s hospitality. By nature we were “strangers” to God; indeed, we were his enemies. He practiced the ultimate hospitality, turning us not only into his guests but into his family. And there’s always room for more.

Thankful for God’s hospitality, just like you,

pastor
